The Co-op is introducing its first wines from Romania and Uruguay.

The convenience retailer is adding a new Romanian Pinot Noir, described as a “budget-friendly red” at £5.50 per bottle, and a Uruguayan Finca Traversa Tannat Merlot “the perfect full-bodied red for South American wine lovers”.

Sarah Benson, Co-op’s wine buyer, said: “Eastern European wines continue to offer exceptional value and quality that our customers and members are attracted too, whilst this new Uruguayan wine will expand our South American wine range beyond Chile and Argentina.”

The Romanian Pinot Noir is produced by Cramele Recas, which is located in the Banat region in the South West of the country. Cramele Recas is Romania’s largest exporter of wine.

The wine from Uruguay is produced in the capital Montevideo, by three-generation producer Finca Traversa. The winery prides itself on the sustainable nature of the winery and wines are produced through solar panels and the increasing use of composting in place of inorganic fertilizers.
