Rob Caskie’s reputation was made as an assistant, and then successor, to the late David Rattray at Fugitives’ Drift in in South Africa, a 5,000 acre Natural Heritage Site, where many thousands have been moved by his graphic telling of the battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift.

Caskie has spoken on several occasions at the Royal Geographical Society.

The Battle of Rorke’s Drift was a battle in the Anglo-Zulu war in January 1879 when a small British garrison named Rorke’s Drift was attacked by 4,000 Zulu warriors.

Rorke’s Drift was successfully defended by 139 British soldiers and after the battle, eleven men were awarded the Victoria Cross.

On Friday, September 28, Caskie will be speaking at St Michael’s Church in Great Sampford about the battle.

Doors open at 7.30pm for a glass of wine and light refreshments and the talk starts at 8pm.

Tickets are £15 and available from Chris Robinson on 01799 586276 or cpr2@btinternet.com. Tickets are also available from the Tourist Information Centre in Saffron Walden.

Funds raised will be donated to Sampfords PCC.
