SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - The public is invited to attend a Memorial Day ceremony at the Happy Homestead Cemetery on Monday, May 29 at 11:00 a.m.

The annual remembrance event is hosted by the American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe and their Ladies Auxiliary. After the ceremony, locals and visitors are invited to members for cake and refreshments at the American Legion Hall.

Topics include proper varietal selection, location in the garden or container, planting options and methods for protecting the young plants and fruit. Join UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe for a free workshop to learn how food can be grown at the Lake. Participants receive instruction on cultivation techniques, and history/background on the plants being highlighted.

Best selling book and Netflix series "13 Reasons Why" has sparked conversation about mental health and suicide among youth after the lead character leaves behind 13 tapes after she kills herself. Each tape tells a different person the part they played in her death.

As a response to the movie and how students will react to it, Lake Tahoe Unified School District intervention counselors will be holding a community panel discussion called "300 Reasons Why Not" on Tuesday, May 30 at South Tahoe Middle School's Multi-Purpose Room.

There are proposed improvements to Highway 50 from the state line at the South Shore to Spooner Summit, and the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) would like to share ideas and hear your comments. On Wednesday, May 31 there will be a public meeting at the Zephyr Cove Elementary School multi-purpose room located at 226 Warrior Way in Zephyr Cove, with an informational presentation held at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend the open-format meeting at any time between 4 and 7 p.m.

South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club and Raley's are hosting the annual Dale Sare Memorial Kid's Fishing Derby at Sawmill Pond on June 3, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Fishing tackle and bait are available for all kids ages 14 and younger. Don't know how to fish? That's okay, there will be helpful fishing guides at the event as well as a fish cleaning table.

There will be prizes, hot dogs and drinks for the kids.
