If all goes as planned, Chester County will soon be the home of the first vineyard/winery in this part of west Tennessee.

On Wednesday, Dec. 19, Valeria and Rich Pitoni, along with Chamber officials, broke ground on the vineyard at Stillwater Farms, 375 Oak Grove Lane.

Stillwater Farms is a 153-acre agri-tourism business specializing in farmstay getaways. It opened to overnight guests on Jan. 1, 2007 with a two-bedroom cottage, later adding an Air Stream “glamper.” The farm produces hay and row crops. The farm also has exotic animals, and they host a variety of events including weddings. A vineyard is a natural addition to the business run by the Pitonis who are of Italian descent. They hope to produce the grapes for process off-property to produce a wine of their own label, with the ultimate goal of have the winery business all on their property. Valerie Pitoni said the process is a huge learning curve for them, but that they are up to it.

The grapes will be a specialty Italian Glera grape, called Prosecco, not currently released for production in the U.S. Rich Pitoni describes it as an “Italian Champaign.”
