PEABODY — The pop-up pub is back, an opportunity for locals to drink, dine and dance in Peabody Square now that spring has arrived.

"The pop-up model has been popular since we first tried it out a couple of years ago,” Mayor Ted Bettencourt said. “Not only are events like the pop-up pub a fun time, but they allow us to introduce residents and visitors to the improvements and new businesses downtown."

The city and Peabody Main Streets will host the event on Saturday, May 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Courthouse Plaza.

Ipswich Ale Brewery’s beer trucks will sell their craft brews, and wine will also be available for purchase. DJ Rick DeSanctis will provide the music. Those who don't dance can challenge their friends to a cornhole tournament or a game of Jenga.

Admission to the pub, for ages 21 and over, is $5. Peabody Main Streets is also offering a discount for those who dine out beforehand — just provide a receipt dated May 12 from a downtown restaurant to receive one free pub ticket.

“Restaurants throughout the square have told us they see a bump in business as we encourage attendees to dine locally before or after the event,” said Deanne Healey, president of Peabody Main Streets.

For Bettencourt, the pop-up pubs are an important part of transforming Peabody Square into a destination.

“Giving people a reason to come downtown is key to our revitalization efforts," he said. "Usually they will find some other reasons to come back.”
