NEW BEDFORD — The New Bedford Whaling Museum is playing host to evening of wine tastings and delicious Portuguese food from local restaurants while raising money to support the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society on Saturday, April 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Harbor View Gallery.

The Azorean Maritime Heritage Society (AMHS) promotes Azorean culture and shared whaling heritage by raising awareness and pride within New England’s Azorean-American community.

Founded in 1997, the society is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

Funds raised from this event will support AMHS water activities (including its International Regatta), cultural programming and scholarship fund.

Every four years, crews from the Azores travel to New Bedford for the regatta for rowing and sailing races in Clarks Cove. There are only 63 Azorean whaleboats remaining in the world. Three of those Azorean whaleboats — the only three in the United States — are in New Bedford and maintained by AMHS.

Tickets for the wine and food tasting cost $45 per adult.

There will be a plentiful assortment of dishes provided by local restaurants, as well as desserts and espresso coffee, a traditional end to a Portuguese meal.

The event will also include a silent auction with items including local getaways, golf packages, family day trips, wine tastings and much more.

To purchase tickets, go to or pick up tickets in person at Luzo Auto Center. 19 County St., New Bedford.

Limited tickets will also be available at the door.
