In 2016, per capita consumption of wine increased by 8% to reach 780ml. Although this was a significant rise, when compared to other countries in Latin America and Europe there remains much stronger room for growth. In 2016, per capita consumption of wine in Argentina and France stood at 23 litres and 37 litres, respectively. Over the review period the Mexican market witnessed a significant increase in the range of wines available, with this encouraging consumers to learn more about this beverage. In 2016, total volume sales of wine approached 100 million litres, up 9% on the previous year.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In 2016, the wine category was led by La Madrileña with a total volume share of 19%, followed by Pernod Ricard Mexico with 15%. Both companies offer well-positioned brands with a longstanding presence in the country. La Madrileña, for example, has the exclusive distribution rights to brands from E & J Gallo Winery (the US), Las Moras de Grupo Peñaflor (Argentina) and Viña Tarapacá and Misiones de Rengo (Chile). The company also owns the leading brand in sherry, Tres Coronas. The latter is widely used for cooking (desserts) and is also a basic ingredient in a popular beverage prepared with orange juice and eggs.

PROSPECTS

Over the forecast period wine is expected to record a dynamic total volume CAGR of 8% to reach sales of 145 million litres in 2021. This positive performance will be driven by an increase in consumption among existing consumers but also the growth of the category’s consumer base as others decide to add wine to their beverage choices. This will be fuelled by curious consumers looking for new experiences. Growth over the forecast period will be in line with that of the review period.
