Those attending the 49th annual Candlelight Charity Ball on Dec. 10 will dine and dance the night away at Kirtland Country Club.

The event — major fundraiser of the year for the Western Reserve Junior Service League — is expected this year to top $1.2 million in money generated to assist programs and nonprofits funded by the League.

Those attending the black-tie event will choose among filet mignon, chicken, grilled salmon and vegetarian entrees for the 7:30 p.m. dinner, following cocktails at 6:30 p.m. Bill Brown, owner of W. Brown Custom Jewelry in downtown Willoughby, has designed a $5,000 one-of-a-kind black onyx and moonstone necklace as a raffle prize. Dennis Samson and Nightbreeze will play music for dancing. Cake lunch

Cake decorator David Heritage will give ideas for holiday creations in his presentation for the Lunch and Lecture Dec. 8 at Skye Bistro in Mentor. Tastings, including a special dessert, will be part of the fun.


Starting at 11:30 a.m., attendees will enjoy lunch from the Sky Bistro menu, then attend the free demonstration. Reservations, although not required, are recommended because seating is limited. Skye is at Best Western Lawnfield Inn and Suites at 8434 Mentor Ave. Call 440-974-3572.

Victorian Tea

Tickets may still be available for the Holiday Victorian Tea, hosted by the Wickliffe Scholarship Foundation Dec. 3 at Pine Ridge Country Club, 30601 Ridge Road, Wickliffe.

The annual tea framed around a luncheon and fashion show from Chico’s, gets underway at noon. Tickets, at $35, may be purchased at the Wickliffe Public Library or from Kathy Reddin at 440-278-4659.

Blue chip tasting

Twelve wines, each priced at $50 or more, will be poured from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 3 at Colonial Beverage, 8389 Mayfield Road, Chester Township. This Blue Chip Wine Tasting will feature light appetizers, cheeses and charcuterie. It’s $65 and by reservation only. Call 440-729-7303.

Holiday baking

Cooking teacher Judi Strauss will lead a Holiday Baking class from 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 6 in the kitchens at Wildwood Cultural Center in Mentor.

Learn traditional favorites along with less-traditional ones, such as tree-shaped sweet rolls and cheese puffs that can also serve as gifts. There will be plenty to taste in class and many recipes to take home.

Fee is $17, less for Mentor residents, plus a $9 food fee payable to Strauss on class night. Wildwood is at 7645 Little mountain Road. Register at 440-974-5720.
