The newly built Real Canadian Superstore in South Surrey has added B.C. wine to its shelves.

A small crowd of customers, store employees and government officials gathered near the store's cheese section Tuesday for a public unveiling of the B.C. wine selection.

The store will carry more than 400 varieties of B.C. wines; 55 per cent coming from small, medium and estate wineries.

"I think what's important is we're offering smaller wineries an opportunity to shine through this process. It's an important part of growing the sector and increasing the number of successful small businesses in British Columbia," Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Stephanie Cadieux said at the event.

The store is the first of six superstore locations that will sell B.C. wine. Two more locations will be unveiled by the end of November.

"This new store in Surrey makes it 12 grocery stores across the province providing customers with a more convenient shopping experience," said John Yap, parliamentary secretary for liquor police reform.

Last spring, Save-On-Foods at Southpoint became the first grocery store in the province to sell B.C., and Save-On at Semiahmoo followed suit.
