WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse of Sunnyside was named this week as co-chair of the Congressional Wine Caucus, serving alongside Democratic California Rep. Mike Thompson.

Newhouse, a 4th District Republican, is also a hops and grape farmer. “I am proud to represent the flourishing, high-quality wine region of Central Washington, and I am honored to join my friend and colleague Representative Mike Thompson to serve as the first co-chair of the Congressional Wine Caucus from Washington State,” Newhouse said in a press statement. “Mike truly understands the priorities and concerns of the wine community, and I look forward to working with him ensure that our nation’s wine industry — from wine grape growers to winemakers and sellers — can continue to thrive and grow.”

The bipartisan caucus was established by Thompson in 1999 to represent the interests of wine growers, vintners and merchants. Washington state boasts nearly 1,000 wineries and more than 350 wine grape growers, and Washington State University is one of only 14 universities in the United States to offer a viticulture and enology degree.
